Overview

Childhood memories with my late grandmother have given birth to this stunning piece! She was a disciplinarian but also a drama queen! J and her way of doing it was in such a way that you will appreciate her after the lessons, she used proverbs/sayings a lot. There used to be spiders and webs around the walls and roof of her grass thatched kitchen, as naughty grand children who liked to play and do crazy things, she would often warn us against games that would harm or get us into trouble but you know kids… the very thing you are warned against is the very thing you want and must do, so my siblings, cousins and I went “hunting” for these spiders and we were busy ransacking and causing damage around grandma’s kitchen some were on the look out to make sure grand ma’ was not within vicinity while we were busy causing damage…….well.. One minute we were busy and the next I was screaming and running calling out for help with a spider patched on my wrist, granny came out rushing from her main house but instead of coming to my rescue she was screaming too because of the damage we had done to her kitchen…She looked at us gave me a prolonged stare and said “ Nandachelelwa yaatsia ninako nabukhwe” loosely translated “One who does not listen to advice carried filth/ bad behaviour to their in-laws” it’s an equivalent to English proverb “Experience is the best teacher”.
